Hi,
I rushed this blog to post as soon as I'd fixed it.
Some further thoughts - be careful that you are not fooled into deleting the real defender - Microsoft's one.
Also, I create the dummy 'defender.exe' because some viruses check for the presence of a file and infect if it is not present. The version I had claimed to be a product of Trend Micro.
There were several sites offering tools to download a cleaner, but one of those I tried was listed as dangerous. So I dug around. I didn't find a fix, but I found this post http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f50/manganum-malware-protection-virus-help-574015.html where someone had identified the executable. I couldn't find a legitimate post on any of the major AV vendors specifically listing this malware, and I didn't want to download anything. So, from the information gleamed above I took the next logical step.

I "managed" to get this thing while looking at small engine and auto repair forums.

Anyway,
I saw that shortcut this "Malware Protection" left on my desktop points to defender.exe as you've said.
I have Windows XP, and the exact path for me was: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data

I'm going to try something like what you have done,
Thanks,
John

Thanks Michael! This was very helpful. Your instructions didn't apply exactly to my version of Windows, but with them I managed to disable Manganum, which then permitted normal operation. (There was no line that began with Manganum, but there was one that began with 'Defender'. I unchecked the box to the left of 'Defender', clicked 'Apply' and 'Save'.) I'll now try Symantec's free Power Eraser and see if that finishes off the beast. So far, so good. Thanks again!
